Flip Fraser was an outstanding individual in journalism and theatre, leaving a lasting mark on the cultural scene in the UK. His life’s work shows his dedication to promoting Black history and culture, and his legacy is still inspiring and educating people today.

Flip’s journey began in Kingston, Jamaica, on October 25th, 1951 where he was born ‘Peter Randolph Fraser’ to Margaret and Byron Fraser. He attended Jamaica College on a scholarship, where he excelled academically, and in sports, especially in track & field and football (where his nickname ‘Flip’ came from!). At 15, Flip moved to the UK when his father was stationed at the Jamaica High Commission in London. Growing up in a diverse environment, he developed a unique perspective that he used to bridge cultural gaps throughout his career. After leaving Bradford University in 1971, he got his first job as a record promoter for Junior Lincoln with artists including The Heptones, Count Prince Miller, Dennis Brown, Gregory Issacs and Ken Boothe. It was during this period that his interest in the Media took root and inspired his career as a journalist, freelancing with major publications.
Knowing that Black voices were hugely underrepresented, Flip became the first editor of The Voice Newspaper, which was launched in 1982. He played a crucial role in bringing issues relevant to the Caribbean diaspora to the forefront, providing a platform for news, cultural commentary, and advocacy.
